Why have your dog walked?
‘Fish need to swim, birds need to fly…and dogs need to walk!’ Cesar Millan
Dogs are pack animals with a lot of energy. They need a job to accomplish in order to feel happy. Without this, an unhappy dog can often cause trouble for its unsuspecting owners, such as excessive barking, biting and chewing furniture. Many owners believe exercising their dogs in the back yard is sufficient however dogs have a need to move forward in a linear direction. Your dog’s ancestors, wolves, used to migrate for up to 10-12 hours a day in search of food. This migrating DNA is still encoded in every kind of dog today whether you have a Poodle, Rottweiler or Labrador. Having your dog walked is the best way for him to use up all that excess energy. Cesar Millan (of the famed Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel) recommends a minimum of two 30 minutes walks per day and sometimes more depending on the dog’s energy level.
Dogs do a lot for us. They give us unconditional love, watch our house while we are gone and even while we are sleeping! The best thing we can give them as thanks is to make sure their primal needs are fulfilled and that starts with regular exercise!
